What is the Blakely Historic Preservation Commission?

The local Historic Preservation Commission is charged with reviewing any major/minor work project involving a material change in appearance that affects the exterior features of a historic property within the district or individually-listed historic properties. The review process is guided by The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic PropertiesCity of Bainbridge Historic Preservation Design Guidelines (adopted June 26, 2025 until local design guidelines are developed for Historic Downtown Blakely) and the issuing of the Certificate of Appropriateness.

Blakely Historic Preservation Ordinance Adoption

The City of Blakely adopted the Historic Preservation Ordinance and established the Historic Preservation Commission on June 6, 2023. Properties found within the boundaries of the recommended Local Historic District represent some of the most important resources that define the unique character of Blakely.  Those who own and occupy properties within this district continue to add to the history found throughout the community and should see themselves as stewards of these resources. The historic integrity of each building within the district can outlive many more generations if cared for properly and can continue to be adapted to new technology as long as nothing is permanently changed or discarded.

What are Historic District Benefits?

The Georgia Historic Preservation Division works hard to help communities realize their full potential and benefit from a historic district. A historic district that is aesthetically cohesive and well promoted can be a community’s most important attraction. The retention of historic areas as a way to attract tourist dollars makes good economic sense. The protection of local historic districts can also enhance business recruitment potential. Companies continually re-locate to communities that offer their workers a higher quality of life, which is greatly enhanced by successful local preservation programs and stable historic districts.
